The Big Picture
Some big picture things we hope to encourage:
to encourage you to...
1. Look closely into the wonder that is God’s world...Practice the art of paying attention (and it’s application to the larger world and to one another )
2. Develop a sense for the maybe endless possibilities of the world of art.
3. Recognize that the elements and principles of drawing and composition are at work all around us in daily life, and therefore in God’s world...in the things we look at, touch, read, write, wear, discover, imagine, create...
4. Become familiar with design vocabulary and apply this language in discussion.
5. Experience a variety of drawing styles, mediums, and techniques.
6. Develop additional confidence in your individual artistic abilities
7. Discover innovative and imaginitive ways to use graphic techniques for expressive purposes (this includes exploring line quality, tonal range, compositional inventiveness, surface richness)
8. Practice hospitality (in welcoming our work, and the work of others...develop ways to look at and respond to works of art in a respectful and welcoming way...)
9. Consider art’s relationship to issues within Christianity and humanity.
10. Practice noticing and creating relationships (within our work, between our work, with one another, in the world)
11. Tackle problems from creative angles; look for surprising solutions.
12. Become engaged with line, form, shape, space, texture, value, rhythm, repetition, proportion, scale, emphasis, unity, variety, composition, balance...

I am very excited to begin this intense exploration of Drawing with you all!!! Moodle will be a great resource for you.. FINAL PROJECT
For your final project you are asked to create a drawing that uses charcoal and/or pencil...or a combination of these materials. The work should involve value shifts, layer, gesture, depth, perspective, surface richness, reductive processes, use of line AND volume/form, interesting mark-making, and very strong composition/layout that fills the whole page.
Your challenge is to first take photographs to discover images that are powerful in terms of emotion/feel/or tone. Your job over the next days is to collect photographs (taken by you in black and white) that capture a feeling that 'takes us somewhere'. LOOK and/or CREATE dramatic light! What is the poetry of this, subject, place, or face? Why is this image important to you? Think less about beauty and more about TONE. Perhaps you let us see something we might NOT usually see: something that is gritty, personal, real. Let us see the world with YOUR eyes. Consider unusual angles, dramatic light, texture, and contrast as you look for powerful images.

--A moment in time
--A figure in context
--A place that has an emotional connection to YOU (maybe an old worn out place, a place full of memory, a hidden place, your room, a chapel, a barn, a coffee shop?)
--People around a table
--Dusk
--A collection of objects/still life that captures a particular mood or feel
--People studying
Some additional concepts/themes that might help you consider TONE or FEEL as you select subject matter:
fragments, memory, searching, wonder, poetry, nature, healing, abandonment, light, reflection, things here and gone, thresholds, balance, things leftover, things forgotten, things on the brink of change, the overlooked, beauty in the everyday, awareness, gentleness, uncertainty, being alone, peacefulness, connection, bonds of friendship, renewing solitude, slowing down, freedom, mystery, joy, play, restoration, transformation...
