Mark-Making Images and Questions

WRITE /WRITE/ DISCUSS/ MAKE:

Check out work by the following artists...

Brice Marden

Cy Twombly

Vija Celmins

Julie Mehretu

Suzanne McClelland

1. What does the work of the artists above have in common? (WRITE...send answers to Ms. Ridl's email)

2. We sometimes describe artists' work by discussing the 'visual language' that they develop. What comprises the visual language of these artists?...in other words, what seem to be repeated motifs in their visual languages? (Please challenge yourself to describe elements that distinguish the visual language of each artist.) (WRITE...send answers to Ms. Ridl's email)

3. While we might be tempted to describe abstract work as random, there are structures in place in this work and decisions that have been made that contradict 'randomness'. As soon as an artist decides to keep a mark, or cover a mark (even if this decision is made on a gut level!)  order and intentionality arise in the artist's visual language.  Some of the structural units of visual language include line, shape, color, form, motion, texture, pattern, direction, orientation, value, scale, angle, space and proportion. Identify some of these structures in the work of these artists...and in your own work. Where do you begin to see ORDER even in your supposed CHAOS? (DISCUSS!)

4. 'Steal' a mark (or marks) from these artists and from the work of your peers! Add to your layered mark-making page! (MAKE)
