    TECHNICAL DRAWING 2 - Homkes

    Textbook: "Architecture"

  • Topic 1

AN INTRODUCTION TO 3D SOLID MODELING - using Solidworks 2015, a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software program

    • Students complete about 20 increasingly difficult assignments using Solidworks design software for about 6-8 weeks
    • Students can "print" their designs on our new CubePro 3D printer
    • Students can compete in a Muskegon Community College Drafting Contest in December of each year using Solidworks
    • Topic 2

AN INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND TEAMWORK
      • Students work in small groups and design and build an object of their choice using the following problem solving sequence:
STATE A PROBLEM --> BRAINSTORM THE SOLUTION AS A TEAM --> SKETCH AND DRAW THE SOLUTION --> BUILD A PROTOTYPE TO TEST THE SOLUTION
      • Topic 3

AN INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURE (for most of 2nd semester)

        • An overview of Architecture - usually starting with a field trip to visit a local building project
        • Build a 8' x10' shed for a backyard to learn the basics of structures, roof trusses, floor systems, etc. (this shed is sold to HC staff or friends of HC or given to Habitat for Humanity)
        • Draft 6-7 views of a residential home using SoftPlan 2012, an architectural software program
        • Topic 4

          COURSE OBECTIVES:

          1. Learn enough about 3D solid modeling (Solidworks) to excel at college in the CAD lab and also be able to consider a career as a CAD designer.
          2. Learn to work in a team environment by managing a project as part of a small group.
          3. Through exposure to residential architecture learn enough about buildings and structures to consider a career as an architect, civil engineer, contractor, home designer, etc.
